Olivia also continued to make good progress. She gained another 50 grams, putting her at 1290, nearly 2 lbs 14 oz. She's now gained more than a pound since birth. It's pretty exciting to watch her grow. Her feeds also got increased to 22 mL, nearly full feeds, and she's getting only fluids through her IV line. The fellow stopped by her bed to let us know that she was planning to pull her picc line tonight. We were very excited. Then, as Dad was getting Olivia ready to come out for some snuggle time, her temperature was low. Just like that the fellow decided to skip Olivia's 5pm feed and likely postpone pulling the picc line, all as precaution in case she had an infection. As a parent of NICU babies, the possibility of an infection is something you do not want to hear. That concern, coupled with the step away from the picc line removal, no snuggle time, and a brady (breathing episode) right before we left, made for a real bummer of a visit.
Usually, for the sake of sanity Mom and Dad try not to call for updates from home. Tonight we made an exception to see how Olivia was doing. At 10pm Dad talked to the night nurse, coming downstairs to give Mom a thumbs up. Olivia's temperature went back up, she got her 8pm feed, and they are once again considering removing her picc line tonight. Her breathing got better after the nurse readjusted her cpap, and she's back down at room air. A huge relief. And just for a laugh, when Dad asked about Lucas the nurse shared that he's developed a new trick - waving his feet around and pulling off his leads. I think both babies are just trying to give us a head up about their independent-minded personalities - just like some other people I know :)
